Method

I utilize a variety of teaching methods gathered from years of extensive study with some of the world's most respected vocal professionals, including Dolora Zajick, Carol Vaness, Susan Eichorn-Young, W. Stephen Smith, Lorraine Nubar, Patricia McCaffrey, Alison Bolshoi, Bill Stone, Jeanne-Michele Charbonnet, and many more from The Curtis Institute of Music, one of the world's leading elite music conservatories (and my Alma Mater). Lessons are tailored to each individual student depending on what type of learner you are: Auditory, Visual, Kinesthetic, or most commonly a combination of all of these. I utilize body mapping, which I learned from Dr. Jan Prokop, and a lot of physical gestures, as well as pictures and diagrams in order to convey both the very tangible and less tangible ideas behind healthy vocal technique and expression. I find that there are always multiple ways to explain a concept, and I work to find what makes sense to my student, so they never leave the lesson with questions unanswered.

I have studied diction and foreign language pronunciation with some of the most reputable operatic language coaches, including Kathryn LaBouff for English, Corradina Caporello for Italian, Bénédicte Jourdois for French, Ulrike Shapiro for German, and Ghenady Meirson for Russian, and I also speak some Italian, French, German, and Spanish.

I enjoy giving my students sufficient tools for their toolbox to be able to make their own artistic choices of how a note should be sung or approached, across a variety of vocal genres. I believe there is no right or wrong vocal aesthentic, but only that which is most healthy, and can give the student the greatest versatility, longevity, power in the voice, and vocal range so that the student can be the full artist they wish to be.

A versatile vocalist and teacher, I have performed in operas, musicals, pop vocal competitions, jazz, and as lead singer-songwriter of the band,

The Fancy Balloons.

mission

Mission

Singing ability is not something that a person is either born with, or not - it is learned, studied, and mastered. Musical exposure in utero and young childhood can have a deep impact, but those who do not have the same exposure can still attain the ability to sing. In our culture, it can be easy to simply dismiss someone as talented or not; there is no denying that the ability to match pitch comes much easier to some than others, but I believe that these factors, including nurture and nature, can be overcome, and the ability to match pitch is practiced and learned - it just may take certain folks longer.

My mission is to help anyone who wants to sing, be able to sing with confidence and ease. Then, help them take that to the profesional level, if that is their wish. I find deep joy in the students I've been teaching since young childhood who are now successfully attending prestigious vocal festivals, getting into top music programs, and landing all the leads in their musical theatre auditions, and one of my favorite things to do is take a student all the way from the very beginning of their musical exposure (notice I said exposure, and nothing about age!), to a mastery level. But, I love working with everyone, and I do know how to connect with young kids as well as older adults.

One of the most challenging things about being a singer is the ability to stand in front of another person - or audience - and despite the nerves we all feel, push on with joy and confidence for every performance. I help coach my students through performance anxieties and hesitations.

I believe in educating my students in the most well-rounded manner possible, including training in music theory, aural skills & ear training specific to the needs of a singer, and basic piano for all of my students. Utilizing a codified method for pitch-matching including visualizations and a number system, students learn to recall and sing back intervals and complex atonal melodies with ease, and progress quickly in their ability to sight-read. Structured rhythm practice and methods help demystify contemporay pop and jazz rhythms, and empower the student to always be with the conductor.

I firmly believe that when a musician has confidence in all of the fundamentals, their true artistry and creativity can shine through.

I embrace the philosophy of my alma mater, The Curtis Institute of Music: "Learn by doing." Singing is truly a window to the soul, so sing with joy and love the process!
